Apartment laundry areas are often afterthoughts. They may be tucked in a hallway, hidden behind bifold doors, or squeezed into a kitchen corner. Because the space is tight, a few good systems matter more than a full makeover.

Choose a realistic sort system

If you do not sort laundry often, do not build a complex system. A simple hamper with two sections is usually enough:

• Darks or towels

If you sort by person or room, use labeled baskets instead. The best system is the one you will actually maintain during a busy week.

Use the wall above the machines

The air space above a washer and dryer is prime real estate. Add:

• One or two shelves
• A hanging rod for air-dry pieces
• Hooks for a lint brush or mesh bag

Place heavy detergent on the lowest shelf and light items higher up.

Decant only if it helps

Detergent jars can look pretty, but they are only useful if they make laundry easier. If you prefer original containers, store them in a handled bin so you can pull everything out at once.

Make room for drying

Many apartment laundry zones fail because there is no plan for damp clothes. A fold-flat drying rack, clip hanger, or over-door hook can solve this without taking permanent space.

Add one folding helper

You do not need a big folding table. Even one of these helps:

• A basket-top lid
• A rolling cart with a flat surface
• A nearby cleared dresser top
